This week we have another Change Cheh directed kung fu film, Five Shaolin Masters (aka Five Masters of Death),with fighting choreography by the great Lau Kar Leung and Lau Kar Wing. This is another excellent Shaw Brother Studios production with more traditional kung fu fighting thanks to the style of Lau Kar Leung. The storyline’s setting is based on the historic conflicts between the Qing Dynasty and Shaolin.

five shaolin masters 02 Kung Fu Saturdays: Five Shaolin MastersFive Shaolin Masters is about former members of a monastery which was previously burned down into ruins by the Qing soldiers. The five former members split up to later rejoin seeking vengeance for the destruction of their Shaolin temple, the death of their comrades, and to locate the traitor who sold them out. This is a solid movie with great fighting direction making the finale extremely enjoyable. I love the interchanging of combat styles during the climax of the film.

Five Shaolin Masters stars some of the greatest legends of Hong Kong action cinema with David Chiang, Alexander Fu Sheng, Ti Lung, Wang Lung WeiMeng Fei, and Chi Kuan Chun. I am happy to find this flick because I have not watched it since I was 13 years old.

Enjoy!
