Kung Fu Saturdays: Legendary Weapons of China

In the next few months we should be concluding the Brave Archer saga with the fourth installment, however this week I have a special classic kung fu treat starring Lau Kar Leung, Lau Kar Wing, Hsiao Ho, Gordon Liu, and Alexander Fu Sheng; Legendary Weapons of China (aka 18 Legendary Weapons of China or Legendary Weapons of Kung Fu.) This is a must have film for your martial arts movie collection!

This movie’s plot elements regards supernaturally endowed kung fu fighters during the Boxer rebellion in China on the eve of the 20th century. One of the supernatural abilities focused in the movie were those of pugilist warriors who were invincible against bullets used by Western foreigners, but the flavor of the movie is the arsenal of weapons showcased in combat! These weapons in reality are also known as the 18 Arms of Wushu.

The movie’s lead and director, Lau Kar Leung, is also a masterful martial artist who was taught by a former pupil of the legendary Wong Fei Hung. He is also a masterful choreographer who was also an integral part of Shaw Brothers Studios and Chang Cheh’s earlier action films. Lau Kar Leung’s noted ambitions for his movies was the demonstration of real Kung Fu skills and techniques. Many other notable films in his catalog include 36 Chamber of Shaolin, Dirty Ho, Mad Monkey Kung Fu, and Heroes of the East. True hardcore kung fu classics!

Lau Kar Leung is definitely one of the all time geniuses of Kung Fu cinema! You better recognize!

Now let us get down to this week’s business! Pop the popcorn and indulge the Legendary Weapons of China!
