Kung Fu Saturdays: Shaolin Challenges Ninja
Q Ball
Q Ball is a South Florida inner city native who has embraced Hip Hop culture ever since He first heard "Rapper's Delight" in 1979. His journey to live the culture was enhanced during the massive relocation boom of New Yorkers throughout the 80s which gave South Florida the nickname, "The 6th Borough." His enthusiasm lead him into the skills of Lyricism, Graff Writing, and Track Producing and now writes for Old School Scholar.
This week’s Shaw Brothers flick is another Gordon Liu classic; Shaolin Challenges Ninja. I have been searching for this one for a while because it is truly an original. I had no idea what its original title was until I found out this was the infamous Heroes of the East (which I thought I have never seen before. It turns out I have!) This film has also a third title, Challenge of the Ninja.
Why this flick is an original is due to its Chinese vs Japanese martial arts storyline that transpires after an aristocratic arranged marriage. The actors in the movie are indeed Japanese but their involvement was in good taste. The movies emphasis demonstrates how contrasting both Chinese and Japanese cultures are regarding etiquette and martial arts styles.
This movie is one I have enjoyed many a time, and I believe you will, too!
