What Is Alternative Hip Hop?

By Danger S • Jun 10th, 2008 • Category: Feature Articles Print This Print This

Rakim Follow the LeaderI’m sure you’ve heard the term before; Alternative Hip Hop. What a funny name. I thought Hip Hop music had no boundaries or guidelines. I thought Hip Hop music was composed of a conglomerate of influences blended to create a unique sound.

To be alternative in the music biz means you have to be going against the grain of an established and defined sound. Oh, wait, I’m forgetting. Mainstream America thinks t he (c)rap music being shoved down their throats is real Hip Hop. Anything that doesn’t conform to that is alternative.

They have it all backwards. The artists who are pushing the envelope into new territory while being ignored by Clear Channel puppet radio stations are exhibiting the true elements of Hip Hop. Why don’t we just change the name of the crap on the radio to something like Gangsta Hop or Pimp Hop since it’s dominated by sex and violence. Then we can drop the alternative from Alternative Hip Hop and call it what it truly is…HIP HOP!!!

That’s just my opinion, but I think I’m right!
